The Derrick Brooks Charities Youth Programs Advisory Committee held the Earl Silas Bridging The Gap event on Saturday, December 14, 2023 at the Springhill Park and Community Center in Sulphur Springs. Over 250 people attended the event including Tampa Mayor Jane Castor, State Representative Dianne Hart,  Hillsborough County Commissioner Gwen Myers, Lynora Kirksey of the Office of the Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, Agent M. Darrell Daniels, Executive Director of Derrick Brooks Charities Youth Programs, and co-founder of the event stated the other co-founder, Earl Silas, who was the Weed and and Seed Director for TPD until retirement, was a driving force to help bring necessary services to Sulphur Springs especially to better community and police relationships.

“It was only fitting for us to name this event after him because of everything he has done for this community. We Want his legacy to last forever,” Daniels stated.

Several of those in attendance commented on the event.

Tampa Mayor Castor stated, “I was a major in this district when I hired Earl. He has done a phenomenal job, and we have always supported this and other events that bring the community together.

Earl Silas stated, “I am surprised every year how everyone rallies together to put on such a great event. I am humbled by this honor.”

The day started with a scavenger hunt involving youth and first responders working together as a team. Next is an honest and open table discussion between first responders and youth. Other activities included a painting contest, Madden game contest, kickball game, and the basketball tournament between the community basketball team, TPD, HCSO, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue and Tampa Fire Rescue.

“We must make sure there is something for everyone. Our goal is for everyone to better understand each other and work together,” said Jacqueline Coffie-Leeks, President of the Sulphur Spring Neighborhood of Promise and Derrick Brooks Charities Youth Programs Advisory Committee.

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue and Tampa Fire Rescue battled it out in the championship game with the Tampa Fire Rescue winning. The winning plaque was awarded to Chief Barbara Tripp and her team.

“This is more than about sports. It’s like always say. I was more than #55. It’s about what we do in our community. And you have shown it today,” said Derrick Brooks.

“I represent this district and serve on the advisory committee because I believe everyone can do great things,” said Rep. Dianne Hart.

“We don’t know each other because we don’t communicate with each other,”said Colonel Anthony Collins of HCSO. This event was a day of communication and fun for everyone.
