On September 10, 2016, the Rites of Passage mentors held a parent meeting at Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate High School. In the meeting, we discussed the programs overview and upcoming events. Parents also had an opportunity to address concerns and ask questions. Thank you to all the families that participated. KNOWLEDGE is POWER and that’s exactly what the young ladies of the ROPP gained in the month of October while visiting the Human Rights Center. Learning about the background and history of our 30 human rights was enlightening and informative. In addition to the educational experience, we enjoyed the International Day of The Girl Luncheon. Guest speakers shared powerful lectures about empowering girls/women through education and employment opportunities. Issues of human trafficking, equality and social justice were also topics of discussion. The girls will return to the Human Rights Center in February to finish the class and receive certificates of completion.
During the months of November 2016 –March 2017 the young ladies had opportunities to participate in various activities. Officers Perry and Lovette from the Tampa Police Department spoke to the girls on topics regarding bullying, absentee fathers and building your brand. Mrs. Tia Young, owner of Tampa Bay Etiquette Academy hosted a private Dining & Social Etiquette Luncheon at Maggiano’s Little Italy Restaurant for our mentees. Topics covered were table manners, formal introductions, greetings and handshakes, conversation skills, public speaking, sitting and standing with confidence. Can someone say ice-skating! The girls spent quality time bonding and having fun celebrating the holiday season ice-skating at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. To kick of the New Year, we honored Dr. Martin Luther King by participating in the MLK Parade and our very own Derrick Brooks had the honor of being Grand Marshall! The girls have almost completed their classes involving human rights. One more class to go and they will receive their certificates! We observed the month of March by focusing on historical women in black history. The girls created and presented vision boards in the memory of these influential women. As always, thank you all for your continued support of the ROPP.
